In my early art journey, acrylic paints are my preferred medium because of their flexibility. Acrylics are easily manipulated which can add interesting texture to the piece as well. This is also the main reason that I love to use acrylic for backgrounds as it makes the feature objects pop out visually. As I explore the beauty of art, I then come across another medium – oil painting which is now my main medium. I found oil paints very fascinating. It provides for a wider range of colors and a rich color depth because
they can be layered and mixed more freely than other paints, such as watercolor or acrylics. I often using many layers, to create a piece that has depth and life. Oil paints can also be left open for long period of time without drying, this characteristic makes it possible for an artist to work on a painting over several sessions without fear of the paint drying up too early.

My painting process is slow and meticulous. I may have an idea when I start working, but the painting can often take a different direction. Each painting gives me a chance to awaken to the beauty that is around me. The composition of shapes and colors often brings out an unexpected image that can be developed further. As I slowly build and excavate layers of paint, my relationship with the imagery deepens. The most exciting part is the unveiling of the artwork as I continue to work on each piece. As a nature lover, the more I paint the more I focus on the alert to sounds, sights, and smells around me. I strive to be a good observer and listener by pausing and taking it in. The interplay between land and sky at the horizon line and water and sky in reflections captivates me. The infusion of light into the receding hills stops me in my tracks, as do the last rays of light falling across the treetops and hills. The
ability to capture a sense of the passage of time through an extended experience of presence and attention is important to me, something that is hard for most of us to do in our distracting digital age.

Painting is very therapeutic; it is also a great tool to get to know ourselves and enable us to reflect our inner significance. It does take courage to paint, but once you paint the first stroke on the canvas, the magic of art will bring you to an amazing life journey that you never expected – that’s what happens to my students. I see them from saying “I can never paint; I can’t draw ……” at the beginning, to their eagerness opening themselves to explore all the possibilities, building up their self-confidence and
strengthening their self-expression and adjusting their sensitivities. Such joys and accomplishments are priceless.
There is no right or wrong in art. There is no painting is the same, like human. Accept everything from us, never compare because we are all unique. We should be proud of ourselves and accept our differences. Be brave to unfold your potentials and let art bloom you.

As a dentist, I need to learn about hands, eyes and brain coordination to work efficiently.

I started taking evening photography courses from a photography film school in Vancouver in the 1990s. I spent one evening night per week, 3 hours each night, learning about the basics of film development, darkroom technique, shooting different types of lighting situations. I learned how to print b/w and colour prints. I found this is my way of relaxation after one whole day of hard work in the office. In 1994, I entered my photos in Canadian National photo competitions. I won lots of medals including Gold, Silver & Bronze medals. My winning photo “The Horse drive“ was selected to be the front cover of Photo Life magazine in 1994. I entered more photo salon competitions organized by PSA <Photographic Society of America>. I found that my action shots of moving subjects got me most prizes because the judges and audiences appreciated the degree of difficulty in capturing moving subjects.

After 2000, film photography was dead and everything moved to being digitally captured. I was unsure how I could compete and use Photoshop to manipulate my images. I am not skill in this. In 2007, I bought my first digital SLR camera and learned how to use it. There are advantages of digital camera, such as no fee for processing the images, higher ISO film speed, etc. I used a telephoto lens to capture “The fighting bald eagles” which won Sony World Award, National Award for Canada.

Now I recognize that it is not what type of camera that I use to take the winning photo. It is the brain behind the viewfinder that takes the winning photos. It took years of learning, trial & errors, and experiences.

I participated in competitions from around the World, from China, Russia, Europe. Photography is a universal language, no translator required.

    Biography

George Ching Yuen LO has practised dentistry in Vancouver since 1977. He is a general dentist but is one of 5% dentists who actively practices Microscopic dentistry. In fact, he says the reason he has not retired as early as many dentists is due to his use of that. He considers practising microscopic dentistry as his greatest accomplishment because it is a skill so few dentists have. He has been able to avoid the toll the dental professional often takes on the backs and necks of many dentists. With a microscope magnification, it works like the zoom lens of his camera: he can dial in the degree of magnification with built-in fiberoptic light source.

George is also an international award winning photographer, having won the prestigious Sony Canada National Award 1995 for his amazing photo: “Fighting bald eagles.” He also participated in international
photo competitions: 35 AWARDS from Russia with over half a million photos entered. One of his entries was selected to the Third Round where top 2% of all entries were selected. He also participated in competitions from China and Europe with many awards.

My art is primarily about having fun. I enjoy using bright colours and juicy textures. I am interested in conveying a feeling, in making visual poetry. Most of my work involves slow, repetitious, and meticulous labour— animation, knitting, quilting. These actions bring me to a state of meditative concentration, which I also enjoy.

Much of my current work is done collaboratively, as I am in a collective called Flavourcel. Being in Flavourcel is a very rewarding experience as it allows me and my art to grow in unexpected ways. I get to support my friends and our collective art as we create it together.

Preserving the legacy | Telling the story

A new opera by Madeleine Thien • Alice Ping Yee Ho • Paul Yee
starring Spencer Britten • Vania Chan • Erica Iris Huang
Derek Kwan • Starring Matthew Li • Emma Parkinson
Mary Chun, music director and conductor • Desdemona Chiang, stage director

City Opera Vancouver’s new opera is a story of family and neighbourhood, racism and resistance, history and tomorrow. In two acts and two hours it examines six characters, two families, and a chorus of male ghosts, from the building of the CPR through to our own times. It deals with violence and despair, the Head Tax, the Exclusion Act, paper sons, and paper promise.

It is a Western opera, but incorporates Chinese themes, sounds and sensibilities. And it is a love story. CHINATOWN will be presented in a staged concert format. Not a word or note is omitted. We offer an orchestra of ten, including the dizi, erhu, and guzheng. There are six leads, and a chorus of eighteen. Supertitles are projected in Traditional Chinese and English. The opera runs two hours, with one intermission.

The inspiration for CHINATOWN lies in our history, a great neighbourhood and its people, and its resistance against racism – both historical, and resurgent today.

Tickets are only $20, $40, and $60, and available at https://www.vtixonline.com/Chinatown/

CHINATOWN runs at the Vancouver Playhouse, Hamilton x Dunsmuir, at 7:30pm on 13, 14, 15, and 16 September, and at 2pm on Saturday 17 September.

    Interconnected Artist Spotlight: Joanne Cuevas

    Artist Statement

The work I have curated is explorative and is a reflection of the natural environment and the ever-changing subject matter that surrounds me. With photography and paintings, I try to capture the beauty within the subtleties of life by striving to transform the mundane. The nature of the west coast has found a way to inspire me to make art through its organic forms and earthy tones within my paintings. With portraiture, I try to capture POC and subjects with whom I have meaningful connections in my life using gouache, acrylic, and oil paints.

I love working with both traditional and digital artistic methods. When I paint and draw I find I can tangibly exercise nuanced detail and connect to my physicality. On the contrary, designing digitally becomes a challenge of intention to let go of the unnecessary and deeply consider how the viewer may perceive a message.

My design work is where I experiment with bolder colours and minimal forms while my illustrations evoke a whimsical nature inspired by children’s book illustrations. As an artist and designer, there is an amalgamation of different styles within my work whereby I am not tied to one style as I shift from different mediums whether it be illustration, photography, or design.
