About this event
We are hosting this dinner to raise funds to further develop comprehensive and sustainable programs for cleft lip and palate (CLP) treatments. Every year, more than 3,400 children are born with CLP in Vietnam. The annual total is almost six times that of the Canadian total. Because CLP is a treatable medical condition, Planet Smile for Kids in partnership with SmileTrain will be going back to the National Hospital for Odonto-Stomatology (NHOS) in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam to provide education for parents and training for dental and medical professionals caring for children with CLP. With your support, we will share and spread knowledge so the treatment of CLP can proliferate beyond Ho Chi Minh City.
Your support will greatly improve the outcome for children with CLP and help prevent:
- Abortions & abandonment
- Bullying & stigmatization
- Delayed physical & mental developements
- Hearing loss & speech impediment
- Gaps in continuum of care from birth to young adulthood
- Loss of quality of life for both the child and their families for a lifetime.

The Goal :
A comprehensive CLP program at NHOS will support parents and children fix a treatable medical condition. Treatment will bring positive change that will last a lifetime.
The Journey / Hành trình:
- November 2015 – Dr. Chanh Le, director of NHOS; Dr. Andrew Tsang, Vietnam-based UBC Dentistry alumni; and NHOS team came to observe at UBC Dentistry & BC Children’s Hospital.
- May 2016 – Dr. Sandra Fastlicht established Planet Smile for Kids to train & advance CLP treatment programs.
- May 2018 – the Comprehensive Cleft Care Center at NHOS was opened.
The Objective
Canadian professionals from UBC Dentistry, BC Children’s Hospital, SickKids Hospital, and auxiliary talents will continue to support and share knowledge with NHOS. Funds raised from this event will be used for:
- Renovation of audiology testing rooms at the NHOS CLP Care Center;
- Symposium (from November 12 – 18, 2022) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam;
- Surgeries – live and simulations;
- Professional workshops for: nasoalveolar moulding, audiology, speech, nursing, nutrition and oral health;
- Patient-care workshops for parents;
- Patient fee subsidy for audiology testing;
- Baby cots – two already on order.
